What will the future taste like?

In the near future, new technologies will be spicing up our daily eating habits. To protect the climate and promote health, researchers are working on the production of synthetic food.

Here in the Futurium, everything revolves around the question: how do we want to live? In the exhibition, you can discover many possible futures; in the Forum, you can participate in open discussions; and, in the Futurium Lab, you can try out your own ideas.

In processes such as precision fermentation and 3D printing, scientists are combining state-of-the-art methods of biology with information technology. For example, proteins such as those found in milk and eggs can already be produced on a large scale without the involvement of animals. Some types of cheese could soon come straight from the lab, while gluten-free bread and low-fibre chicken legs could be produced by 3D printers. How far along are these new technologies? Can we use them to combat climate change? And how will they find their way into our nutrition mix in the future?

The image used for the event was created using the AI-supported image generation technology Midjourney. It is for visualisation purposes and may contain stylised or abstract representations. All rights to the generated images are owned by Futurium or the respective authors, where applicable.
The following prompt was used: A high-resolution photograph taken in a modern, sleek industrial kitchen or laboratory setting. The focal point is a large, metallic 3D printer with a robotic arm that is extruding red, smooth, and slightly translucent material into the shape of an apple. The apple is placed on a rotating platform, which allows the printer to work on it from various angles. In the background, two men are standing and working at stainless steel countertops. They are dressed in white chef's uniforms.
